Platini: A dozen countries countries could host Euros | Euro 2012 | Tribal Football

UEFA president Michel Platini has suggested that UEFA Euro 2020 could be hosted in 12 or 13 cities across Europe rather than being staged in one or two countries, reports Sport Business.

UEFA president Michel Platini has suggested that UEFA Euro 2020 could be hosted in 12 or 13 cities across Europe rather than being staged in one or two countries, reports Sport Business.

Platini made the announcement at a news conference on Saturday as UEFA seeks to tackle the issue of a shortage of interest in staging Euro 2020.

Turkey has long stated its intention to bid for Euro 2020, while Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland confirmed their interest in exploring a joint proposal and Azerbaijan and Georgia are keen on lodging a joint bid.

The European Championships will expand from its current 16 teams to 24 in time for France’s hosting of Euro 2016.

The expansion of the Championships presents additional logistical challenges to potential host countries, a subject Platini seemed to acknowledge on Saturday.

“Euro 2020 could be held all over Europe,” he said. “You could have one country with 12 host cities, or we could have it in 12 or 13 cities all over Europe. This is just an idea, but in these days of cheap air travel anything is possible.

“The majority of the executive committee believe it’s a good idea and say we should have a really good think about this. We will have meetings with all of our national federations coming up to December and in December or January we are going to make a decision.”

Regardless of any potential switch in strategy, UEFA said the deadline for Euro 2020 bids is September 2013, ahead of a decision being made in May 2014.

Platini added: “It’s an idea I feel really passionate about and will be a lot easier from a financial perspective for all the countries. As opposed to building airports or 10 stadiums in a country, this would be rather easy because it would be one stadium per host city. That’s all we can say at the moment. We have not decided anything yet, but by January we will decide if we are going to have the Euros in one country or all over Europe.”

Wanderers coach Popovic dismisses Inzaghi link | Australia/Asia News | Tribal Football

Western Sydney Wanderers FC coach Tony Popovic has dismissed talk of former AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi joining the A-League newcomers for their debut season.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC coach Tony Popovic has dismissed talk of former AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi joining the A-League newcomers for their debut season.

However, Inzaghi’s Australian agent Lou Nesci said the A-League – and competition new-boys Wanderers FC – could be a viable destination.

“Filippo is certainly keen to come to Australia and the Wanderers would seem to be a good fit, especially with a sizeable Italian community in that part of Sydney.

“I feel he would excite people. He’s still scoring goals and still fit to play at a very high level despite his age.

“I feel he would give Wanderers extra appeal in terms of putting bums on seats.

“I realise some clubs might worry about his age after previous bad experiences with imports but I feel they should have no concerns on that score on this occasion. He has a curiosity to come to Australia and perform.”

But Popovic said suggestions the club were actively chasing the 38-year-old were pure speculation.

“There’ll be talk of players every day, which you understand, but I’ve had no discussions about (Inzaghi).

“A name like that will always excite the fans and people around football to see if it’s possible.

“But a name in a paper is far away from becoming a reality.”

However, the Tehran Times claims he has decided to put pen to paper on a new contract.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s hard at times because when you come home from football and you’ve got your kids and your wife and everything there, and they’re running around, it helps out, whether things are going good or bad.

“For myself, I come home to a lonely house, a lonely room, and you start to think sometimes. They want me to go back, but who knows what the future holds. I’m back here and I’m free and I’m looking around for a new challenge maybe. But if things are right I’ll go back.”
